I know that section is called 'General Football' and that people can discuss whatever they want, but has anybody noticed a huge increase in the amount of Premiership football threads recently?

It seems we get a thread started on games between every non-entity in English football these days. This morning I find out that Villa -v- Birmingham and Newcastle -v- Sunderland are worthy of their own threads, as is 'Rafa' getting legal advice.

During the off-season, I can get over it, there's not much to discuss in CCFC terms and it's silly season on what there is to discuss, but we're slap bang in the middle of our season and I'm getting grumpy.

If you start up a thread about hugely important events ouside of Britain you'll get about one answer so nobody bothers. Its the sky and oirish sun influence. Start up a thread about Darlington instead - now thats interesting!

PS - Qaysar Qizilorda are winning in the Kazakh league. Im very disappointed as my team Jetisu Taldiqorghan are only fourth.

People in Ireland have always been interested in British football. This was the case even before Sky etc. They are our nearest neighbours, we share a common language and large amount of Irish people work and live there so our interest in their football isn't that unusual.

The football season in the UK is coming to an end. There's bound to be an increase in threads around this time as the title and relegation are still undecided.

I can't help it, I'm a football fan and some of the best footballers play in England and it's hard to ignore it.

It is possible to support Cork City and be interested in other leagues including England and Scotland.

But Michael Devine walked so that his feet were at a 45 degree angle (he was not the only one walking like that in City's team).

No it isn't.

True, but most of the posters on here are more interested in the English and Scottish leagues than they would be in the other European leagues. I take an interest in the European leagues, but I'm as guilty as any when it comes to posting on the UK game.

Of course people are going to be more interested in the UK leagues because we watch their television stations and the reason we watch their tv is because we speak the same language. If we had been invaded by the Spanish instead of the English a few hundread years ago we might all be speaking Spanish and watching La Liga, but sadly it was the English, so we are just stuck with it. Can we move on now.

I agree, I never said it wasn't, I don't go in for excluding people just because they have an 'english' team, that's not where I'm coming from at all, there just seems to be a lot more of these threads recently and featuring teams that have never been discussed on here before. I thought it'd lessen as we got our own football back, but the opposite seems to be the case.

Dont Sky have Spanish? Dont Channel 5 have italian? And doesnt Setanta have Dutch and German? Of all of them Channel 5 is free - you have to pay for Sky and Setanta.

Also its the imbalance - people have always watched english football but now its constant. RTE used to show about about 8 matchs live in a season before - The European cup final, the FAI cup final, and the FA cup final + Ireland matchs. There was balance there - now it been thrown out the window.

The Hoops used to mean Shamrock Rovers not Celtc, Rovers meant the same not Blacburn, City used to mean Cork City on aertel for instance - thats changed.

Yes Sky have Spanish, but it isn't given the same blanket coverage as the Premier league. I don't have channel 5 on Sky (Should I have it) and when Italian football was on Channel 4 in the 90's I used to watch it, but never fell in love with any of their teams. I think you're being naive if you think that one day everyone will forget the premier league in England and become EL converts. Both will have to exist together.

I think RTE are building up to showing an Eircom League match every week by the end of this new contract they negotiated with the FAI, which included MNS, so it's not all bad.

I know what you mean about seeing City or hoops on errortel, but I always expect those stories to be about Cork City and Rovers too. Erikkson for City was interesting. It'll take time to improve the profile of the EL, but it is getting better.
