I see our "friend" Don Givens has announced his latest U-21 Squad and managed to ignore our league. Surely there are players playing here deserving of a place in the squad. The FAIlures sending out the wrong message again to players who decide to ply their trade at home. ranting.gif ranting.gif

Republic of Ireland Under-21 Squad for Malaysia Tournament:

Darren Randolph - Charlton Athletic
Shane Redmond - Nottingham Forest
Darren Dennehy - Everton
Eddie Nolan - Blackburn Rovers
Michael Spillane - Norwich City
Shane Lowry - Aston Villa
Ian Morris - Scunthorpe
Marc Wilson - Portsmouth
Michael Collins – Huddersfield Town
Stephen Quinn - Sheffield United
Alan Power - Nottingham Forest
Keith Keane - Luton Town
Keith Treacy - Blackburn Rovers
Anthony Stokes - Sunderland
Billy Clarke - Ipswich Town
Karl Moore - Manchester City
Alan Judge - Blackburn Rovers
Stephen Maher - Yeovil Town
James Berrett - Huddersfield.

Keith Keane - Luton Town

Luton have been relegated to league 2. Givens shouldn't be left in charge of an U12s team, never mind the U21s team.

Who would people have picked from the el for that squad? Not many under 21 i can think of.

Seamus Coleman from Sligo Rovers for one. He's 20. I'd have Ronan Finn from UCD in there as well.

Thought coleman was older but yeah he's probably worth it. Not sure about Finn, cant say i'm too familiar with him though. Pretty slim pickings all the same though.

No eL players were picked because we're in the middle of the season and clubs would be losing players for a few weeks.

QUOTE
We have a very young squad going out”, said Givens. “The Scottish season is still underway and there are play-off matches to be played in England so we decided not to call-up any player who may be involved in those matches. We also decided not to involve any eircom League of Ireland players, who are currently mid-season. The eircom League of Ireland managers have been very co-operative with me in the past and so I don’t want to call-up players who have important league matches to play.

Finn was in the squad before. He's developing into a fine midfielder IMO. Coleman should one of the first names on Given's list.

I'd love to believe that anybody involved with the Rep of Ireland seniors team or U-21 actually cared about what was going on in our own league, but the reality is that they aren't interested.

There were 2 or 3 EL players who deserved to be named in that 40 man squad Trap 'O Tony announced. ROD couldn't get a look in when he was here, but he starts 3 games for Sunderland in the Premier League and has a few substitute appearances and then he is worth looking at then.

This is a quote from Givens I found on Scunthorpe's website. I'd give the benefit of the doubt, but I'm too cynical.
"The eircom League of Ireland managers have been very co-operative with me in the past and so I don't want to call-up players who have important league matches to play

But Michael Devine walked so that his feet were at a 45 degree angle (he was not the only one walking like that in City's team).

No it isn't.

Clearly a WUm but I will take the bait.

AFAIK he has never qualified for a tournament.

Read the thread properly to find your answer.

--------------------
I'll never forget a match against Vasco at the Maracana in February 1963. Vasco were winning 2-1 with very little time left on the clock, and Fontana started jeering at me. 'Where's the so-called King?' he mocked. I scored a goal, but Fontana still didn't stop taunting - he was so sure their victory was guaranteed. But in the closing moments of the game, I scored the goal that gave us the draw. I retrieved the ball from the back of the net, jogged over to Fontana and handed it to him, saying, 'Here - take this back to your mother. It's a present from the King.'

It's a very genuine reason. It's not just one international game, it's a tournament in Malaysia which could potentially keep the players away from their clubs for 2-3 weeks.

I'd say Givens is actually disappointed to be leaving EL players out. Seamus Coleman and Conor Powell are two important members of his squad. I know he's generally a clown but give the guy a break on this. There's no ulterior motive.

i can understand his reasoning, as long as he doesn't overlook them in the future
