  4. The fixture list for the 2008 eircom League of Ireland season will be released on Friday, January 25th. The fixtures will be placed on the league’s official website, www.eircomloi.ie, at 11am and will be issued as a press release shortly after.
  5. Cork City Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Alan Mathews as Manager. Mathews, 42, was formerly manager of Longford Town where he enjoyed considerable success, winning two FAI Cups and one League Cup in his six seasons in charge of the Midlands club. Mathews has put pen to paper on a 3 year contract with the club, and will be officially unveiled at a press conference in Beamish House tomorrow afternoon at 4.30. He expressed his delight at taking on the role and told CorkCityFC.ie: “I consider it a great honour to have been given the opportunity to manage the club. I’m looking forward to working with quality players at a club that has such passionate supporters. I can’t wait to get working and I look forward to a successful future with Cork City.” Commenting on the appointment, the Rebel Army’s General Manager Aidan Tynan said: “We are delighted to welcome Alan on board as manager. He has a proven record of success over the past number of years with Longford Town, and we look forward to him bringing success to Cork City in the coming seasons.”
  6. The draw for the 2008 Setanta Sports Cup will take place on Thursday January 17th at the SAS Radisson Hotel in Dublin Airport, kicking-off the fourth season of the highly successful tournament. This season’s competition sees a change to the format, with the competition beginning in February and ending in October. The first round of matches will be played on February 26th, with a total of three series of matches being played by April 15th. The competition will then break before recommencing on September 1st with the remaining group fixtures, semi-finals, and the Final which is due to be played on October 18th. Members of the media are invited to attend the draw for the 2008 Setanta Sports Cup. The details of the draw are as follows: Venue: SAS Radisson Hotel, Dublin Airport Date: Thursday, January 17th Time: 2pm As champions of their respective leagues, Drogheda United and Linfield will be seeded in the draw.
